Durango Miracle - Stuck in the Mud
Outside Durango, CO - 1993
By Carol Howard
Doc and I had gone to visit our friends in Durango just after the winter snow had thawed, sometime in early 1993. I
remember it was still cold and it had rained for days, creating a clay-mud mixture that stuck to everything like
glue. We were driving my Nissan Diesel Pick-up at the time, and headed out into the mountains to look at some land
that we had heard was for sale This land turned out to be in the middle of the Ute Reservation. We drove and drove
while getting further and further away from any paved roads. As I mentioned before, it had been raining and we had
to watch carefully to where we were driving as to not end up in some very deep ruts. We had just come around this
one bend deciding we had pushed our luck as far as it would go, when we hit one of these ruts, and we sunk into the
mud.
Doc and I are pretty clever in the problem solving area so we set to work figuring out a way to get us out of this
situation. The more things we tried, the deeper we sunk. By now we were imbedded up to the axles in mud and were
sliding over to the edge of the road leading down the bank. I won't go into all the things we tried, just know it
was plenty. I could not believe the look on Doc's face when he turned to me and admitted that this was one
situation he could not solve. The amazing thing I remember was how calm we were. I told Doc that it was God's turn,
we had done all we could, lets ask him to figure it out. So Doc and I said a little prayer thanking God and all our
Guidance for the help we were receiving.
I can't remember whether it was 3 minutes or 5 minutes before we started to hear a strange low rumbling sound. I
looked at Doc and asked him, "What in the world is that?" We didn't have long to wait as we watched a large
off-road vehicle with the biggest tires we had ever seen come around the bend. Doc and I stood there with our
mouths hanging open as did the guy in the truck. He came to a stop next to us and said, "What in the world are you
doing out here?" "We were looking at some land and we got stuck in the mud, we replied. He then told us that if we
had gone around the next corner, we would have never gotten out. I then asked him what he was doing out there. He
told us he didn't know, really. He didn't work on Sunday, and all of a sudden he had this urge to go out and check
some oil wells. We said, "We have just been praying for someone just like you to come and help us, we know why you
are here!"
This man pulled us out without a scratch to our car, wouldn't accept any money, and said he knew that God had sent
him to us. Sometimes people say they don't think God listens to them but we tell them that he sure does! I am very
grateful for all the times, and there are many, that we have had Divine assistance.
